Greg Luti’s surreal flash fiction “The Man Out Of Time” follows a disoriented man who wakes up in a strange, meaningless world of gray corridors and glowing yellow lakes — only to discover he is being quietly observed.

An individual finds himself in an area unfamiliar to himself and many others, I can imagine. To one side is a corridor similar to something you would see in Willy Wonka, with its gray appearance and deceptive doors. To the other side is a glowing yellow lake that has platforms that are no larger than a picture frame floating above it. The individual stood between walking down the corridor or searching the lake.

Most unusual is that the area had no feel to it, not of hope or horror. The place is there to confuse you, and any other person there, for none of what I described made much sense. The corridors don’t lead to anywhere. You cannot swim in the lake. And the platforms are just there. This place had no title, for a title implies meaning and purpose, to which this place had none.

“Where am I?” The individual spoke aloud.
